SATIRESatire is when a situation isn't funny, but someone tries and make it into a joke. There are also different types of satires, there is indirect satire and direct satire. For example, a guy was smoking a cigarette by a baby stroller. Another person saw him and said, "good place to smoke". People just try to make a joke out of the situation in a sarcastic way, so you could correct yourself and not get upset. Satire is also not used to hurt anyone. People basically try to use Satire in Comedy and tragedy, because they're basically trying to tell a point of view in a humorous and sarcastic way. In Taylor Mali's "The impotence of proofreading" this article is a great example of Satire. This article is about someone proofreading a paper, but they were mistaken about the grammar and spelling. Also, In this article The Onion , satire was being used. In this article, a woman feels her husband is not spending enough time with her, not doing the same things they used to do, and now when shes alone, she reads a book with a romantic relationship. She feels like she and her husband should have the same relationship portrayed in the novel, so she says, "Sometimes I wish I could just open up the pages and jump right into Bella's skin." She feels like when she's reading her book, shes escaping from her world of loneliness and stress. "Advice to Youth" was also another essay I have read, written in 1882 by Mark Twain. This essay was about giving kids advice about obeying their parents and having good behavior. There was also satire in this story. When Mark Twain said, " obey your parents when they are around, but once they leave and not around you could do what ever you want". He's basically saying, if your parents say don't do something, just wait until they are not around to do it. Now, How was Mark Twain giving "Advice To Youth" by telling kids that? He was being sarcastic about a serious situation.
This cartoon by Mark Parisi is also another example of satire. This image shows two ladies, one buying a phone and the other lady selling the phone. Satire in this image shows the person is buying a phone, but the sign says its a tap phone. "Now, why would a phone store sell tapped phones?" Thats the satire in this situation, a phone store trying to sell a tapped phone to customers. This is satire, because no phone store sells tapped phones in the world! They're just being sarcastic about this situation. I also found another satire in this cartoon image. In this cartoon, another sign says instead of 5 bars, get 6 bars for the tap phone. The example of satire in this sign, they are being sarcastic about the bars on the phone, because most of the phones now have 5 bars, but they say they have 6 bars on the tapped phones. So, by reading different forms of satire, this helped me understand satire a little more. These readings helped me understand, whats being satirized, how it is being satirized, the author's humourous way of thining, and the change expected to happen by the use satire.
